What should you know about globus laryngitis?

Globus is the feeling that something is stuck in the throat when no blockage is present. Laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box and can cause hoarseness, throat irritation and a need to clear the throat. A common cold may trigger laryngitis, while acid reflux can irritate the throat without obvious heartburn.

The sensation may vary during the day and can become more noticeable when swallowing saliva or feeling tense. It should not automatically be labelled globus if food or liquid truly sticks, swallowing is painful, or symptoms continue without explanation.

Rest your voice, sip water, avoid shouting and limit smoke or other throat irritants. Try not to clear your throat repeatedly, because this can maintain irritation; swallow or take a sip instead. If reflux seems relevant, discuss meal timing, trigger foods and treatment with a clinician rather than starting long-term medicine without advice.

A GP consultation can review your throat and voice, ask about swallowing and reflux, and decide whether further assessment is needed. Most short-lived irritation improves as the underlying trigger settles.

Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow saliva, are struggling to breathe, have rapidly worsening throat swelling, or develop sudden severe pain. Arrange medical review for persistent hoarseness, a neck lump, coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, painful swallowing or symptoms that keep returning.

Ask whether reflux, a recent cold, voice strain or another cause fits your symptoms, how long to monitor them, and which swallowing or breathing changes should prompt urgent review.
