What should you know about glioma of the pons?

The pons connects parts of the brain and carries pathways involved in eye and facial movement, hearing, balance, swallowing and limb control. A growth there may cause double vision, facial weakness, unsteady walking, clumsiness, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing or weakness on one side. Symptoms can also arise from other neurological conditions. Magnetic resonance imaging is commonly used to study the brainstem. The scan pattern, clinical findings and sometimes a tissue diagnosis guide classification; a biopsy may not be suitable in every case because the pons is a sensitive location.

Prompt review by a neurologist, neuro-oncologist or neurosurgical team is appropriate when pons glioma is suspected. Bring a list of symptoms and when each began, including changes in walking, speech, swallowing, vision or strength. The team may recommend regular imaging, surgery only in selected circumstances, radiotherapy, medicines to manage swelling, or a combination tailored to the scan and tumour features. Get emergency help for sudden or worsening weakness, inability to swallow saliva, choking, severe breathing difficulty, new confusion, loss of consciousness or a seizure. Rapidly worsening balance or repeated vomiting also warrants urgent assessment. These warning signs reflect possible neurological or pressure-related problems, not a diagnosis of cancer. A specialist appointment should still be arranged for persistent double vision, facial drooping, new speech difficulty or progressive unsteadiness.
