What should you know about Glanzmann thrombasthenia flow cytometry?

Glanzmann thrombasthenia is an inherited bleeding disorder involving platelet aggregation. Flow cytometry analyses labelled cells as they pass through an instrument and can assess whether particular platelet proteins are present on the cell surface and whether they respond appropriately to laboratory stimulation.

The result is interpreted with bleeding history, family history, platelet counts, blood film findings, and platelet function testing. A normal count does not rule out a platelet function disorder, and flow cytometry alone may not settle every diagnosis. The laboratory may also consider genetic testing or repeat testing when the result and clinical picture do not match.

Tell the clinician about nosebleeds, heavy menstrual bleeding, easy bruising, bleeding after dental work or surgery, and relatives with similar symptoms. Share all medicines and supplements, especially those that affect platelet function. Follow the laboratory’s instructions about the blood sample and timing.

Keep a written bleeding plan if the disorder is confirmed. Make sure dentists, surgeons, emergency clinicians, and other healthcare professionals know about the diagnosis before procedures or new medicines are started.

Seek emergency help for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, vomiting or coughing blood, black stools, severe headache after an injury, fainting, breathing difficulty, or heavy bleeding with weakness. Contact the haematology team promptly for a new bleeding pattern or before an invasive procedure.

Ask which platelet proteins were assessed, whether the sample was suitable, and how the result fits with platelet function testing. Ask whether relatives should be evaluated, which medicines to avoid, what to do during an injury, and whether a procedure needs a written bleeding plan.
