What should you know about GGO and lung cancer?

GGO stands for ground-glass opacity. On a CT scan, it appears as a hazy region where lung markings may remain visible. Infection, inflammation, bleeding, scarring, and some lung tumours can produce this appearance. A GGO is therefore a radiology description, not a diagnosis.

If cancer is confirmed, the care team considers the opacity's size, position, solid components, growth pattern, and the tumour's cell type. Genomic tumour profiling may help identify features that influence treatment choices.

Your clinician may compare current and previous scans, arrange tissue sampling, or recommend an interval CT. If a tumour is confirmed and remains localised, lung lobectomy may be considered; other plans can include radiotherapy or chemotherapy depending on the tumour and your overall health.

Treatment decisions are shared with you after staging. Ask how the finding was measured, whether a biopsy is safe and useful, and what the team is trying to learn from each test.

Arrange timely medical review for a persistent or changing GGO, especially when it appears with a lasting cough, unexplained weight loss, chest discomfort, or hoarse voice. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, sudden chest pain, coughing up a large amount of blood, new weakness, or confusion. These symptoms need prompt assessment regardless of the imaging label.

Is the GGO pure or partly solid? Has it changed from an earlier scan? What other causes are being considered? Would biopsy, surgery, or surveillance give the clearest answer? If cancer is found, what staging tests and treatment options apply?
