What should you know about GFP flow cytometry?

Short answer
GFP flow cytometry uses green fluorescent protein signals to identify and measure selected cells in a laboratory sample.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Sample
- Cells suspended in liquid
- Signal
- Green fluorescent protein
- Purpose
- Identify and compare cell populations
What the test means
Cells are prepared in a liquid sample and passed one at a time through a laser beam. Detectors record light scattered by each cell and fluorescence from attached markers or GFP. A computer then groups cells by their measured features. GFP is a fluorescent protein used as a visible signal; it is not, by itself, a diagnosis of cancer.
The result may help a laboratory team confirm whether labelled cells are present, estimate how strongly they express the signal, and compare different cell groups. Interpretation depends on the sample, the controls used, and the clinical question.
What to do with a result
Ask which sample was tested, what GFP was marking, and whether the report describes a positive, negative, or unclear signal. A flow result is read alongside examination findings and other laboratory or imaging results. When the sample comes from marrow, the procedure may involve a bone marrow biopsy.
Do not change treatment based on a fluorescence value alone. Request an explanation of any flagged cell population and ask whether another test is needed to clarify the finding.
When to seek care
Flow cytometry itself is a laboratory analysis, so urgent symptoms usually relate to the procedure or the underlying illness rather than the machine. Contact your care team promptly for fever, increasing pain, redness, swelling, or drainage after a marrow sample. Seek urgent help for severe breathing trouble, fainting, new confusion, or uncontrolled bleeding.
Questions for your doctor
What cell type was the GFP signal intended to identify? Which controls make this result trustworthy? Does the finding change the diagnosis, staging, or treatment plan? When will the full interpretation be available?
Questions people ask
Is GFP flow cytometry a scan?
No. It is a laboratory test performed on cells from a collected sample, not an imaging scan.
Does a GFP signal prove cancer?
No. The signal identifies a labelled feature; clinicians must interpret it with the reason for testing and other findings.
