Getting Rid of a Sebaceous Cyst: What You Should Know

The term sebaceous cyst is commonly used for an epidermoid cyst, a closed sac beneath the skin containing keratin. It may feel like a round, movable lump and sometimes has a central opening. A cyst can become inflamed, tender, red or infected. Other skin lumps can look similar, so a new, growing or uncertain lump deserves an examination rather than home treatment.

Do not squeeze, pierce or repeatedly press the lump, because this can push material deeper and worsen inflammation. A warm, clean compress may be soothing, but it will not reliably remove the cyst. If inflammation is present, a clinician may consider a steroid injection into the skin. If infection has formed a collection of pus, abscess drainage may be needed. Definitive cyst removal generally involves removing the sac and its wall once the area is suitable for the procedure, which helps reduce recurrence.

Arrange prompt assessment if the lump becomes rapidly more painful, hot, red or swollen, starts draining, or is accompanied by fever or feeling unwell. Seek review for a lump that grows, returns repeatedly, bleeds, or does not behave like a typical cyst. Urgent care is appropriate if severe swelling affects the eye, mouth or ability to swallow.
