Getting Rid of Moles on Skin: What You Should Know

A mole is a collection of pigment-producing cells and can be flat or raised, smooth or hairy. Its appearance, position, size and history help a clinician decide whether removal is appropriate. Removing a mole at home can cause bleeding, infection, scarring and loss of useful tissue for examination. A clinician may use a close visual assessment or dermoscopy, then explain whether monitoring or removal is more suitable.

Arrange a skin assessment before booking a cosmetic procedure, particularly if the mole is new or has changed in colour, shape, border, size or sensation. If removal is advised, options can include a procedure that removes the visible mole and, when needed, a margin of surrounding skin. Surgical excision closes the wound with stitches and may allow tissue to be examined. Follow wound-care instructions, keep the area protected from unnecessary sun exposure, and do not cut, burn or tie off a mole yourself.

Seek prompt medical review for a mole that changes, bleeds without clear injury, repeatedly crusts, becomes persistently itchy or painful, or looks notably different from your other moles.
