Pregnancy after miscarriage before your first period

The first ovulation may happen before the next bleed, so a person can conceive without seeing a period. Pregnancy hormone can remain for a while after a miscarriage, which can make home tests difficult to interpret. The timing of ovulation and bleeding varies with how the miscarriage ended, how far the pregnancy had progressed and whether tissue remains. A new pregnancy test or scan may need clinical interpretation.

Ask whether your miscarriage is complete and whether follow-up is needed before trying. Discuss folic acid, medicines, long-term conditions and emotional readiness. If pregnancy is possible, contact your maternity service early and explain the recent loss. A Transvaginal Ultrasound may help assess an early pregnancy when advised. Get urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, fever, chills or feeling very unwell. These symptoms can signal significant bleeding, infection or an ectopic pregnancy. Seek review for ongoing bleeding, worsening pain or a positive test that remains unclear after the miscarriage.

Ask whether the miscarriage has completed, when to test for pregnancy, which symptoms require urgent help, whether you need a scan or blood tests, and when it is medically and emotionally reasonable to try again.
