Getting Bit but Finding No Bugs

Small itchy red bumps may appear after exposure to bed bugs, mosquitoes, fleas, or other insects that are no longer present. Marks can also follow contact with detergent, bedding fibres, sweat, plants, or a new product. Hives, follicle irritation, eczema, and scabies can resemble bites; the distribution, timing, and whether other household members itch help a clinician separate them. Bed bug marks may occur in clusters or lines, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Wash the area gently, use a cool compress, and avoid scratching because broken skin can become infected. Check mattress seams, bed frames, and nearby fabrics without relying on a skin mark as proof. Wash recently used bedding according to its care instructions and pause any newly introduced fragranced product. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine or a short course of a topical corticosteroid suits you, taking age, pregnancy, medicines, and the location of the rash into account.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or a rapidly spreading reaction. Arrange a dermatology assessment if the rash is painful, warm, draining, feverish, spreading, repeatedly returning, or keeping you awake. Persistent night-time itch affecting several people at home also deserves evaluation, even when no insect is found.
