How to get rid of an ingrown pubic hair

Pubic hair can curl back into its follicle after close shaving, waxing, or tweezing. The result may be a red, itchy, or tender bump, sometimes with a hair visible beneath the surface. Tight clothing, sweat, and repeated rubbing can keep the area inflamed.

A similar-looking bump may be folliculitis, razor bumps, or keratosis pilaris. Blisters, ulcers, clusters of painful spots, or discharge need a proper examination because they may have another cause.

Stop removing hair until the skin is calm. Wash the external skin gently, apply a warm damp compress for several minutes, and choose loose, breathable underwear. Leave the hair alone if it is beneath the skin; squeezing or piercing the bump can introduce bacteria, worsen swelling, and leave a mark.

When you resume shaving, use a clean razor, shaving gel, and a light stroke in the direction of hair growth. If the problem repeats, ask about laser hair removal or another method suited to your skin and hair type.

Arrange an examination for a painful enlarging lump, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or symptoms that do not improve. Seek prompt care for severe swelling, difficulty passing urine, or lesions on internal genital tissue. Recurrent pubic bumps may need a prevention plan and confirmation of the diagnosis.
