How to get rid of a dry cough

Short answer
A dry cough often improves with fluids, humidified air, throat soothing, and treatment of its underlying trigger.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Cough type
- A dry cough produces little or no mucus.
- Common triggers
- Viral infections, irritants, allergies, reflux, and airway sensitivity.
- First steps
- Fluids, throat soothing, humidified air, and avoiding irritants.
The short answer
A dry cough produces little or no mucus and may feel scratchy, tickling, or irritating. It can follow a viral infection, occur with allergies or airway sensitivity, or be triggered by reflux, smoke, dust, or some medicines.
What a dry cough may mean
The cough reflex helps clear irritants from the throat and airways. After a cold, the airway lining can remain sensitive even when other symptoms have settled. Nasal drainage from allergic rhinitis can repeatedly irritate the throat, while acid reflux may cause coughing after meals or when lying down.
Wheezing, chest tightness, or cough that worsens with exercise can occur with asthma. A cough lasting for several weeks is considered persistent and deserves a clinical review; it may need assessment for causes such as chronic cough or another airway problem. A dry cough by itself does not identify one specific condition.
What you can do
Sip water regularly and try warm fluids if they soothe your throat. Honey may ease coughing for adults and children older than twelve months, but it should not be given to infants. A humidifier or steamy bathroom may reduce dryness; keep humidifiers clean and avoid burns from hot steam.
Avoid cigarette smoke, vaping aerosols, strong fragrances, and dusty air. Rest your voice, use a lozenge when appropriate, and consider saline nasal rinsing if nasal drainage is contributing. Follow the label on any cough medicine and ask a pharmacist about interactions, pregnancy, or medicines for children. Antibiotics do not treat a cough caused by a virus.
If reflux seems to trigger coughing, smaller meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating, and raising the head of the bed may help. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing a possible cough side effect with the prescriber.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, sudden chest pain, or coughing blood. Prompt assessment is also needed if a cough follows choking, or if a child is struggling to breathe.
Arrange a medical appointment if the cough is worsening, keeps returning, disrupts sleep, comes with fever, wheezing, breathlessness, chest discomfort, vomiting, or unexplained weight loss, or does not settle after a reasonable period. A clinician may listen to your chest, review medicines and exposures, and decide whether further tests are useful.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What is the most likely trigger in my situation? Could reflux, nasal drainage, asthma, or a medicine be contributing? Which treatments are suitable for my age and other medicines? How long should I monitor the cough, and which changes mean I should seek help sooner?

Questions people ask
How can I calm a dry cough at night?
Keep water nearby, soothe the throat with a suitable lozenge, reduce bedroom irritants, and consider humidified air. If reflux is possible, avoid lying down soon after eating and discuss persistent night coughing with a clinician.
Should I take antibiotics for a dry cough?
Antibiotics do not treat viral coughs and should only be used when a clinician identifies a bacterial infection for which they are appropriate.
When does a dry cough need a check-up?
Arrange an assessment if it persists, worsens, repeatedly interrupts sleep, or occurs with breathing difficulty, wheezing, fever, chest pain, or coughing blood.
