GERD and lack of appetite: what to know

Short answer
GERD can reduce appetite when reflux discomfort, nausea, or throat irritation makes eating unpleasant, but persistent appetite loss needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How reflux can affect appetite
Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upwards and irritate the food pipe. Burning behind the breastbone, early fullness, nausea, unpleasant taste, or pain with swallowing can make meals less appealing. A hiatus hernia and excess abdominal pressure can contribute to reflux, but appetite loss has many possible causes, so it should not automatically be attributed to GERD.
Notice whether appetite changes follow meals, lying down, particular foods, or use of medicines. Record swallowing difficulty, vomiting, abdominal pain, and any unplanned change in body weight to discuss at an appointment.
Helpful next steps
Choose smaller meals, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating. Avoid foods or drinks that clearly trigger your symptoms, and avoid eating close to bedtime. Keep fluids going and choose nourishing foods you can tolerate rather than skipping meals. Do not start, stop, or share reflux medicine without advice from a clinician or pharmacist.
Arrange a medical review if reduced appetite continues, returns often, or makes it difficult to maintain normal eating and drinking. A clinician can review your symptoms, medicines, and need for testing.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for chest tightness with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Get prompt medical assessment for trouble swallowing, food sticking, repeated vomiting, vomit with blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, or ongoing unplanned weight loss.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your appetite change fits reflux, whether another condition or medicine could be involved, and which treatment is suitable. Ask how to protect nutrition while symptoms settle and which warning signs should change the urgency of your care.
