Can GERD cause shortness of breath?

Stomach contents reaching the throat can irritate the upper airway and trigger coughing, throat clearing or a tight feeling. Chest burning and bloating may also make a deep breath uncomfortable. Breathlessness that occurs with wheeze, fever, cough, exertion or at night may have another explanation. Possible conditions include asthma, acute bronchitis, COPD, bronchiectasis, anaemia, angina or atrial fibrillation. Anaphylaxis can cause rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, especially with swelling, hives or sudden throat tightness. The timing, triggers and associated symptoms help separate these possibilities.

Note whether symptoms follow meals, bending or lying down, and record cough, wheeze, fever, chest pain or activity-related symptoms. Eat smaller portions, avoid lying down soon after eating, and identify foods or drinks that reliably worsen reflux. Follow any prescribed reflux plan exactly. Arrange a clinical review for recurring breathlessness, especially if it limits walking or sleep. A clinician may listen to your chest, measure oxygen levels, review medicines and assess your heart and lungs.

Call emergency services for severe or sudden breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, chest pressure, or inability to speak in full sentences. Treat rapidly developing breathing difficulty with facial or throat swelling as an emergency. Do not assume these signs are caused by GERD, even when heartburn is present.
