What should you know about genital folliculitis treatment?

Short answer

Genital folliculitis treatment usually starts with reducing friction and shaving, keeping the area clean and dry, and treating infection only when a clinician identifies it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common triggers
Shaving, waxing, sweat, friction, and blocked follicles
Avoid
Picking, squeezing, and harsh products on genital skin

Persistent, spreading, draining, or painful bumps need review

What genital folliculitis means

Folliculitis is irritation or inflammation centred on a hair follicle. In the genital area, close shaving, waxing, sweat, tight clothing, rubbing, and an ingrown hair can damage or block the follicle. Small red bumps, pus-filled spots, tenderness, burning, or itch may appear on hair-bearing skin. The appearance can overlap with other causes of genital bumps, so location and recent hair removal matter when a clinician assesses it.

Mild irritation may settle after the trigger is removed. If bacteria are involved, a clinician may recommend a topical treatment or, when the infection is more extensive, oral antibiotics. Antibiotics are not useful for every bump and should not be shared or used from an old prescription.

Practical treatment steps

Pause shaving, waxing, and plucking until the skin has settled. Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and change out of damp underwear or sports clothing. Choose loose, breathable underwear and avoid squeezing, scratching, or piercing the bumps; these actions can push irritation deeper and introduce bacteria. A warm, clean compress may ease tenderness. Do not put harsh antiseptics, exfoliating acids, or household remedies on genital skin unless prescribed.

A clinician can distinguish folliculitis from an ingrown hair or another skin condition and decide whether medicine is appropriate. Further reading: Folliculitis, Ingrown Hairs, Antibiotics For Skin Infection, and Topical Antibiotic Therapy.

When to seek medical care

Arrange a medical assessment if bumps keep returning, spread, drain, become increasingly painful, or do not improve after you stop the trigger. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly expanding redness or swelling, severe pain, red streaking, or feeling unwell. A painful lump that becomes soft in the centre may need assessment for a deeper collection rather than home treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the bumps fit folliculitis, ingrown hairs, or another condition; whether you should stop a particular hair-removal method; whether a topical or oral medicine is suitable; and how to prevent recurrence if shaving or friction is a trigger.

Questions people ask

Can genital folliculitis clear without antibiotics?

Some mild cases improve when friction, sweat, and hair removal are stopped. Antibiotics are considered when a clinician finds evidence of bacterial infection.

Can I shave over genital folliculitis?

Wait until the skin has healed. Shaving over inflamed follicles can worsen irritation and create more ingrown hairs.
