What should you know about gene RB retinoblastoma?

Retinoblastoma begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. RB1 normally acts as a brake on cell growth. When its function is lost in retinal cells, those cells may multiply abnormally.

An RB1 change may be confined to the tumour or may be present in the body’s cells and inherited. A genetic specialist can explain what a test result means for the child and relatives. The result does not predict every detail of treatment.

Discuss genetic testing with the child’s ophthalmology and oncology team, particularly when both eyes are affected, the child is very young, or there is a family history. Treatment depends on tumour size, position, number, and whether one or both eyes are involved.

Options may include local treatment such as brachytherapy, chemotherapy, or other eye-sparing approaches. The team also considers vision, comfort, and long-term eye health. Keep scheduled eye examinations because new retinal tumours can require prompt assessment.

Contact the care team urgently if a child develops a new white reflection in the pupil, a newly turned eye, worsening redness or swelling, eye pain, reduced vision, or a sudden change in behaviour. Sudden severe symptoms after treatment need immediate medical advice.
