What should you know about Gehwol salve for cracked skin?

Short answer
Gehwol salve may soften and shield cracked skin, but recurrent, deep or infected fissures need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a salve can do
Cracked skin develops when the outer barrier loses moisture, becomes thick or inflamed, and splits under pressure or movement. A salve can form a protective layer, reduce water loss and make dry skin more flexible. It may be useful on heels, soles, fingertips or other areas exposed to friction, but it does not identify or treat every underlying cause.
Repeated fissures can occur with Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, prolonged wet work, harsh cleansers or pressure on the feet. An open crack can sting and may allow bacteria to enter. The product's exact ingredients and directions matter, particularly if the skin is sensitive, broken or already inflamed.
Using the salve carefully
Clean the area gently, pat it dry and apply a thin layer according to the label. Regular moisturising is part of Emollient Therapy and may work better when applied after washing, while the skin is still slightly hydrated. Protect heel fissures with well-fitting footwear and avoid picking, scraping or using sharp tools. Test a small area if the label permits, and stop if new burning, itching, rash or swelling appears.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review if a crack is deep, bleeding, increasingly painful, warm, swollen, draining or surrounded by spreading redness. Fever or feeling unwell can signal a wider infection and needs prompt attention. Foot fissures deserve earlier assessment when diabetes, poor circulation or reduced sensation is present. If careful barrier care does not help or the cracks keep returning, ask about Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the salve is suitable for the exact site, whether the fissure is infected, and how often to apply it. Discuss other ingredients or prescription treatment if the skin is inflamed, how to cover a deep crack, and which symptoms mean you should stop self-care and return for review.

Questions people ask
Is salve enough for recurring heel cracks?
It may help the barrier, but recurring cracks should be assessed for pressure, inflammation, infection or another cause.
When should I stop using the salve?
Stop if it causes new burning, rash or swelling, and seek advice for worsening pain, discharge or spreading redness.
