What should you know about a GE PET-CT scanner?

The PET part detects activity from a small amount of injected tracer, often showing areas where cells are using glucose more actively. The CT part creates cross-sectional views that show the location and shape of organs, tissues, or a mass. Software combines the images so your team can compare activity with anatomy.

A scan may help investigate a finding, plan treatment, assess how a tumour is responding, or look for disease elsewhere in the body. An area of increased tracer activity is not automatically cancer; inflammation and other processes can also affect the result.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions about fasting, drinking water, medicines, and diabetes care. Tell the team about pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, recent illness, and difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothing and allow time for the tracer to settle before imaging.

During the appointment, remain still and follow breathing instructions when asked. Afterward, drink fluids if advised and follow the centre's guidance about contact with pregnant people or young children.

Contact the imaging centre promptly if you cannot follow the fasting plan, have a low or high glucose reading, or develop an illness before the appointment. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, swelling of the face, or rapidly worsening symptoms after the injection.

Ask what the scan is intended to answer, whether you need to change medicines, when and how the report will be shared, and whether another test may be needed to clarify an abnormal area.
