What should you know about Gaviscon for nausea?

Nausea is an unpleasant urge to vomit. Reflux can irritate the food pipe and may bring a sour taste, burning, or queasiness; Gaviscon can reduce that reflux by acting in the stomach. Nausea can also accompany food poisoning, gastroenteritis, gastritis, gallstones, heat exhaustion, hepatitis A, or low blood sugar. The symptom alone cannot show which cause is present, and Gaviscon will not treat those underlying problems.

If nausea comes with reflux, use Gaviscon only as directed on its label and check the formulation with a pharmacist if you take other medicines. Sip fluids, choose small bland meals when tolerated, and avoid lying flat soon after eating. Record vomiting, bowel symptoms, fever, pain, food triggers, and the time symptoms began. Do not keep treating unexplained nausea with an antacid if it is persistent or worsening.

Get urgent help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, chest pain, blood in vomit, black stools, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Seek prompt advice if you cannot keep fluids down, have a high fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or nausea after possible heat exposure. Children, older adults, and pregnant people may need earlier assessment.
