Short answer

Gastritis can reduce appetite because an inflamed stomach lining may cause nausea, early fullness, upper-abdominal discomfort or pain after eating. Small, gentle meals and adequate fluids may help while you arrange medical advice, especially if the appetite change persists.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common effect
Nausea, discomfort or early fullness can make eating difficult.
Helpful approach
Try small portions and regular sips of fluid.
Get urgent help
Seek care for blood, black stools, severe pain or dehydration signs.

What the appetite change can mean

Gastritis is irritation or inflammation of the stomach lining. Appetite may fall when nausea, burning discomfort, bloating or feeling full after a few bites makes food less appealing. The appetite symptom does not identify its cause by itself; infections, medicines such as anti-inflammatory painkillers, alcohol and other stomach conditions can also contribute. Gastritis is one possible explanation among several, and persistent symptoms deserve an assessment.

A clinician may ask about pain, vomiting, bowel changes, medicines, alcohol use and how much you are managing to eat and drink. They may decide whether you need tests or treatment for an underlying cause. What you can do

Take frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if nausea makes larger drinks difficult. Try small portions of bland, familiar foods, and eat slowly; do not force a large meal. Avoid alcohol and foods or drinks that clearly worsen burning or nausea. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice, but tell a clinician about all medicines, supplements and painkillers you use because some can irritate the stomach.

Arrange a medical appointment if reduced appetite continues, keeps returning, or is accompanied by ongoing upper-abdominal symptoms. Keep a brief record of meals, fluids, pain, nausea and vomiting to make the visit more useful.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent medical help for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is also needed if you have signs of dehydration such as very little urine, marked dizziness or a dry mouth, or if appetite loss is accompanied by persistent vomiting or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: What might be irritating my stomach? Should any of my medicines be reviewed? Do I need testing for an infection or another stomach problem? What should I eat and drink while symptoms settle? Which warning signs mean I should seek urgent help? Mention any unplanned weight change, repeated vomiting, blood, dark stools, fever or yellowing of the eyes.
