The machine records breathing through a mouthpiece. You usually take a full breath, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and blow out as hard and as long as instructed. The result helps a clinician assess airflow and compare your breathing pattern with expected values for you.

A reading is not a diagnosis by itself. Technique, effort, recent illness, smoking, medicines, and other factors can affect the result. The clinician may repeat the manoeuvre to check that the measurements are consistent.

Follow the testing centre's instructions about meals, smoking, exercise, and breathing medicines. Wear comfortable clothing that allows your chest and abdomen to expand. Tell the clinician if you feel unwell, have chest pain, or find forceful breathing difficult.

During the test, listen for the coaching and keep the mouthpiece sealed. Coughing or stopping early can change the reading, so mention what happened rather than trying to hide it.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, fainting, or sudden chest pain. Contact a clinician if breathlessness, wheezing, or reduced exercise tolerance persists after the test, because the result needs to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and examination.

Ask what each reported measurement means, whether the test quality was adequate, and whether you should repeat it. You can also ask if your current inhalers or other medicines need review and what symptoms should prompt follow-up.
