Melanoma is a skin cancer that can begin in pigment-producing cells. A photograph can help you notice change, but it cannot confirm a diagnosis. Warning features include a mole with uneven halves, an irregular edge, several colours, noticeable growth, itching, bleeding, crusting, or a new mark that looks unlike your other moles. These features can occur in benign marks too, so the direction matters: melanoma can present with these changes, but a changing mole does not by itself prove melanoma.

A clinician may examine the whole skin surface and use magnification. If the mark remains suspicious, removal or a sample allows laboratory examination. The result guides whether further skin cancer surgery or staging is needed.

Arrange a dermatology appointment for a new or changing mark, especially when the change is persistent or the mole bleeds without clear injury. Take a clear photo with a date and note when you first noticed the difference; do not scrape, burn, or attempt to remove it yourself. A clinician may recommend surgical excision, with the choice guided by the mark and examination findings. If melanoma is confirmed, treatment can include skin cancer surgery and, for selected situations, sentinel lymph node biopsy or immunotherapy.

Seek prompt medical review for rapid change, spontaneous bleeding, an open sore, marked pain, or a dark streak that is spreading at the edge of a nail. Seek urgent care if bleeding will not stop with firm pressure or if you feel acutely unwell. A mole-related concern is assessed by its appearance and evolution, not by assuming what the symptom means.

Ask whether the mark needs dermoscopic examination, removal, or monitoring; what changes should trigger a return visit; and whether close relatives or other moles affect your skin-check plan.
