What should you know about FUPA compression garments?

FUPA is an informal term for fullness in the lower abdomen or pubic area. A garment may smooth clothing, provide light support, and help some people feel more comfortable during movement. It does not change body fat distribution. Swelling after surgery, lymph-node treatment, infection, or another condition needs assessment rather than concealment. When lymph fluid is involved, a garment may be one part of a plan that includes specialist lymphoedema therapy.

Use the size and compression level recommended by a clinician or trained fitter, especially after cancer treatment or surgery. The fabric should feel supportive without digging into skin, restricting breathing, causing numbness, or creating a ridge above or below the garment. Put it on with clean, dry skin and check the area for rubbing, blisters, colour change, or increased swelling. Follow washing and wearing instructions, and remove it if discomfort persists.

Stop using the garment and seek prompt advice for new pain, numbness, cool or pale skin, marked redness, a rash, or swelling that suddenly worsens. Get urgent help for severe abdominal pain, fever with wound changes, chest pain, or breathlessness. A new one-sided swelling or a firm area also deserves clinical assessment instead of self-treatment.
