What should you know about frequent strep throat?

Strep throat is an infection caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. A person may have repeated infections after contact with someone carrying the bacteria, while a persistent sore throat may instead be viral or related to tonsillitis. Fever, sore throat, and swollen glands can occur with strep throat, but symptoms alone cannot reliably confirm the cause. A clinician may examine the throat and use a swab test when appropriate.

Arrange a GP consultation if episodes keep returning, especially when the diagnosis has not been tested. Record when each illness began, associated fever, test results, prescribed medicines, and how symptoms changed. Follow the prescribed antibiotic treatment exactly when a clinician confirms a bacterial infection; do not reuse leftover medicine or share it. Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods while swallowing is uncomfortable. Wash hands and avoid sharing cups or utensils during an acute illness.

Seek urgent medical care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Prompt assessment is also sensible when dehydration develops, fever persists, or repeated episodes interfere with eating, sleep, school, or work. These warning signs describe the need for assessment and do not by themselves identify strep throat.
