What should you know about freeze skin tags over the counter?

A skin tag is usually a soft, flesh-coloured growth, often where skin rubs against skin or clothing. Appearance alone is not enough to diagnose every bump. Over-the-counter freezing affects the tissue it contacts and may cause pain, blistering, crusting, pigment change, or a scar. It can also mask a lesion that needs a different evaluation.

Do not freeze a growth that is changing, bleeding, dark, painful, infected, or difficult to see clearly. Avoid applying a product to eyelids, genital or mucosal skin, broken skin, or areas with reduced sensation. If you have diabetes or circulation problems, ask a clinician first. A dermatology visit can compare cryotherapy, electrosurgery, and dedicated skin-tag removal.

Get medical advice when a treated area becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or wet, or when you develop fever. Have the original lesion checked if it persists, returns, or changes. Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop with pressure, rapidly worsening swelling, or severe pain out of proportion to the treatment.
