What should you know about FPG OGTT?

You may be asked not to eat or drink anything except water before the appointment. The first sample is taken while fasting; later samples show the response after the glucose drink. Some people feel nauseated, light-headed or temporarily uncomfortable. Tell staff if you vomit, feel unwell or cannot complete the drink, because the test may need to be rearranged.

Follow the clinic's instructions about fasting, medicines and usual meals. Bring water and allow enough time to remain at the clinic between samples. Do not change prescribed treatment or deliberately alter your diet to influence the result. Tell the testing team immediately if you become faint, confused, sweaty, very weak or unable to keep the drink down. After leaving, contact your maternity team for persistent vomiting, severe weakness or symptoms that concern you. A result outside the clinic's range needs a care plan; it does not by itself explain every symptom.

Ask exactly how long to fast, whether regular medicines should be taken, when results will be available, and what happens if the test cannot be completed. Ask how any result will affect pregnancy monitoring, meals or further testing.
