What should you know about fowl cholera medicine?

Fowl cholera is a bacterial disease that affects chickens and other birds. The name can be confusing: it does not mean that a person has human cholera. A bird may become unwell quickly, with reduced activity, poor appetite, breathing changes, loose droppings, or unexpected death. Similar signs can have other causes, so a diagnosis based only on appearance is unsafe.

Separate visibly ill birds only if this can be done safely, limit contact with droppings and secretions, and use dedicated footwear or clothing around the flock. Do not give leftover human antibiotics or guess a dose. Contact a veterinarian promptly; they may advise examination, testing, flock hygiene, isolation, and a medicine plan. Clean equipment as directed and follow instructions about eggs, meat, withdrawal periods, and disposal.

If a person has diarrhoea after contact with birds, wash hands carefully and arrange medical advice. Oral rehydration therapy may help replace fluid for some people, while IV fluid therapy is used by clinicians when dehydration is severe.

Seek urgent veterinary help when several birds become ill over a short time, deaths occur without warning, or a bird is weak, struggling to breathe, unable to drink, or unable to stand. A person should seek urgent medical care for confusion, fainting, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down, blood in stool, or severe diarrhoea. These warning signs reflect possible dehydration or another serious illness, not proof of fowl cholera.
