What should you know about formal hearing test?

During audiometry, you usually listen through headphones or inserts and respond when you hear tones. The clinician may also check speech understanding and inspect the ear canal. Results can show whether difficulty affects one or both ears, which pitches are affected and whether the pattern suggests an outer, middle or inner-ear problem. Arrange a formal assessment for gradually worsening hearing, difficulty following conversation, frequent requests for repetition or persistent ringing. Do not insert objects into the ear to clear suspected wax.

Ask which part of the ear may be involved, whether wax or infection could affect the result, whether both ears need testing and when the test should be repeated.
