What should you know about forehead worry lines?

Short answer
Forehead worry lines are usually expression creases, although persistent stress, poor sleep or other symptoms may deserve attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common influence
- Repeated forehead muscle movement
- What lines show
- A skin crease, not a mental-health diagnosis
- Consider the whole picture
- Mood, sleep and physical symptoms
Why they appear
These horizontal lines become visible when the forehead muscles repeatedly lift the eyebrows or tighten during concentration, surprise or worry. With time, skin may retain some of those folds even when the face is relaxed. Lines alone do not diagnose an anxiety disorder or another illness. Feeling Anxious can include racing thoughts, muscle tension, a fast heartbeat or difficulty relaxing; the facial crease is not a reliable measure of emotional distress. Burnout, Depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Insomnia can involve broader patterns such as low mood, persistent worry, exhaustion or disrupted sleep. Hyperthyroidism may also cause physical symptoms such as tremor, heat intolerance or a racing heartbeat, so the overall picture matters.
Practical next steps
Notice whether the lines appear mainly during facial expression or remain when your face is relaxed. Protect skin from strong sunlight, use gentle cleansing and moisturising, and avoid repeatedly checking or scrubbing the area. If worry, sleep disruption or physical symptoms are affecting daily life, arrange a Mental Health Assessment or a general consultation. Bring a short description of when symptoms began and what makes them better or worse.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm, inability to stay safe, severe confusion, chest pain, fainting or sudden neurological symptoms. Make a routine appointment when anxiety or sleep problems persist, interfere with work or relationships, or come with marked weight change, tremor or a sustained racing heartbeat. A forehead line by itself is not an emergency.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your wider symptoms fit stress, a sleep problem or another condition, which assessment is appropriate, and what treatment options could support sleep and daily functioning.

Questions people ask
Do forehead worry lines prove that I have anxiety?
No. They are commonly expression creases and cannot confirm anxiety without considering your thoughts, feelings, physical symptoms and daily functioning.
When should I discuss worry with a clinician?
Arrange an assessment when worry or poor sleep persists, limits daily activities or is accompanied by significant physical changes.
