Forearm pain from pull ups: what to know

Short answer
Forearm pain from pull ups commonly follows sustained gripping and wrist stabilisation, but tendon irritation, nerve pressure, or an acute strain can also cause it.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key load
- Sustained grip while the wrist stabilises
- Early change
- Pause painful hangs and use easier variations later
- Assessment clue
- Weakness or altered sensation
What pull ups load
A pull up asks the forearm muscles to hold your body while the wrist, elbow, and shoulder coordinate the movement. More repetitions, longer hangs, a change in grip, or training through fatigue can raise that demand. Pain near the inner elbow may occur with golfer’s elbow; pain near the outer elbow may occur with tennis elbow. Neither pattern can be diagnosed from the exercise alone.
Diffuse tiredness after a new challenge differs from sharp pain at one spot. Numbness, tingling, burning, or grip weakness suggests possible nerve involvement rather than ordinary training fatigue.
Modify the movement
Stop pull ups and hangs that reproduce sharp pain. For a short period, choose comfortable movements, reduce the number of repetitions, and avoid gripping harder than necessary. Gentle wrist, elbow, and finger motion can maintain mobility; do not force a painful stretch.
When daily activities are comfortable, restart with an easier variation, shorter sets, and generous rest. Progress one change at a time. A physiotherapist can examine grip position, scapular control, elbow movement, and forearm strength. See [Forearm Pain](/symptoms/forearm-pain/) for general guidance.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care after a fall or sudden pop with severe pain, visible deformity, major swelling, or loss of movement. Arrange a clinical assessment for persistent pain, repeated flare-ups, new weakness, numbness, tingling, or difficulty holding ordinary objects.
What to ask
Ask which grip and pull-up variation is suitable, whether elbow tendons or a nerve may be involved, how to regain hanging tolerance, and when to resume full training.

Questions people ask
Can grip type cause forearm pain during pull ups?
Yes. Different grips change the work shared by the fingers, wrist, elbow, and shoulder, so a new grip can expose an irritated area.
Should I hang through the pain?
No. Stop a hang that causes sharp or spreading pain and return only through a gradual, comfortable progression.
