Food poisoning fever and chills

Chills may happen as the body adjusts its temperature, and fever can occur alongside diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, or abdominal pain. Food poisoning commonly presents with fever in some infections, but fever itself does not show that food poisoning is the cause.

The combination of fever, fluid loss, and reduced intake can make dehydration develop more quickly. Note the trend, your ability to drink, and whether you are urinating normally.

Rest in a comfortable room, drink frequent small amounts, and use oral rehydration solution if diarrhoea or vomiting is causing losses. Wear light layers if you feel hot, and use a thermometer if available to follow the pattern. Eat only as tolerated; bland, nourishing foods can be reintroduced gradually.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician before taking fever medicine if you are dehydrated, pregnant, have liver or kidney disease, or take regular medicines.

Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, blood or black stool, severe abdominal pain, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine. Seek prompt assessment when fever is persistent or worsening, chills are intense, or the illness affects a young child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with reduced immunity.
