What should you know about food for acid reflux pregnancy?

Short answer
For acid reflux in pregnancy, eat smaller meals, identify personal triggers, stay upright after eating, and check medicines with your maternity clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First steps
- Smaller meals and remaining upright after eating may reduce reflux.
- Medicines
- Check every reflux product with a maternity clinician or pharmacist.
Why reflux may appear in pregnancy
Pregnancy hormones can relax the valve between the stomach and oesophagus, while the growing uterus can increase pressure on the stomach. This may cause burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid, belching or discomfort after meals, particularly when bending or lying down. Symptoms can vary through pregnancy.
Food does not cause pregnancy reflux in a simple, universal way. Rich or fatty meals, spicy dishes, chocolate, mint, caffeine, fizzy drinks or acidic foods may worsen symptoms for some people. Acid reflux can also coexist with a hiatus hernia or contribute to a cough, but these links do not diagnose a condition.
Food and routine measures
Try smaller meals spread through the day, eat slowly and avoid lying down soon after eating. Keep a diary to identify triggers without cutting out nutritious foods unnecessarily. Choose balanced meals with foods you tolerate, and drink fluids regularly in a way that feels comfortable.
Raise your upper body for sleep if your maternity team agrees, and avoid tight clothing around the abdomen. Ask a pharmacist, midwife or doctor before taking antacids or other reflux medicines; pregnancy changes which products are suitable and how they should be timed with supplements.
When to contact your care team
Contact your maternity clinician if symptoms are severe, frequent, affecting sleep or stopping you from eating and drinking. Seek urgent care for chest tightness with breathlessness, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, or difficulty swallowing. New or unusual symptoms in pregnancy should not be assumed to be reflux.
Questions for your doctor
Which foods should I keep or limit while meeting pregnancy nutrition needs? Is my current medicine safe, and when should I take it? Could my cough, chest tightness or abdominal pain need another assessment? What should I do if symptoms disturb sleep?
