Folliculitis on the stomach: treatment and warning signs

Folliculitis affects the skin around hair follicles. On the abdomen, waistbands, sweat, shaving, waxing, or adhesive materials can irritate follicles. The result may be scattered itchy bumps, tender red spots, or small pus-filled centres. A rash under a dressing or near a surgical site can have another cause, so do not assume every abdominal bump is folliculitis.

Wash gently and pat the area dry. Choose loose clothing, pause shaving or waxing, and avoid fragranced lotions over the bumps. Do not squeeze them or cover them with an airtight dressing unless instructed. A warm compress may reduce soreness. If infection is confirmed, treatment could involve a prescribed topical antibiotic or oral antibiotic; use it exactly as directed and complete the advised course.

Contact a clinician promptly for spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe tenderness, pus, or a deep lump. Fever, chills, vomiting, or feeling faint requires urgent assessment. Arrange an appointment for repeated abdominal outbreaks, scarring, or a rash that persists after friction and hair-removal triggers stop.

Ask whether the spots are folliculitis, contact irritation, or another rash; whether any product or dressing should be stopped; and whether a topical or oral treatment is suitable. Mention recent procedures, pregnancy, allergies, and medicines.
