What should you know about follicular cyst of skin?

These cysts often feel like smooth, rounded lumps that sit in or just below the skin. Some have a small opening or central dot, while others do not. A cyst may be painless and unchanged for a long time, then become swollen, red, warm or sore if its contents leak or inflammation develops. A new or changing lump still needs an examination because several skin conditions can look similar. A clinician may inspect and gently feel it, using the pattern and history to decide whether it is a cyst.

Do not squeeze, pierce or try to empty the lump at home; this can worsen inflammation and introduce infection. Keep the area clean and avoid repeated rubbing. If it is inflamed, a clinician may consider an intralesional steroid injection in selected cases. If it has collected infected material, abscess drainage may be needed. Cyst removal can address the cyst wall when removal is appropriate, and discussing the expected wound care beforehand helps you plan.

Book an appointment for any persistent, enlarging, recurrent or uncertain lump. Seek prompt medical attention if redness is spreading, pain is escalating, the area feels hot, drainage develops, or you have fever or feel unwell. Urgent assessment is sensible for a lump near the eye, one that interferes with movement, or swelling that makes breathing or swallowing difficult.

Ask whether the lump appears to be a cyst, what signs would suggest infection, whether observation is reasonable, and whether removal would include the cyst wall to reduce the chance of it returning.
