What should you know about FNAC and trucut biopsy?

Short answer

FNAC collects loose cells with a thin needle, while a trucut biopsy removes small cores of tissue for more detailed examination.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Trucut

How the methods differ

FNAC, also called fine-needle aspiration cytology, uses a thin needle and suction to collect cells. A trucut biopsy uses a wider, spring-loaded needle to remove narrow cores that preserve the arrangement of tissue. That architecture can help a pathologist classify a lesion and assess features that cells alone may not show. The choice depends on the organ, size and position of the target, the clinical question and whether a particular laboratory test needs tissue. Neither result should be interpreted without the clinical and imaging context.

Planning and recovery

Tell the clinician about blood thinners, bleeding problems, allergies and pregnancy. Ask whether you need to fast or arrange transport, and follow medication instructions exactly. A trucut biopsy may cause more bruising or soreness than FNAC because it takes tissue cores; use only the pain relief recommended for you. The sample can undergo Immunohistochemistry, and selected cases may need Genomic Tumour Profiling. MRI Scan findings may help choose or target the procedure. Do not assume a result is final until your treating team explains it.

When to seek care

Call the biopsy service if bleeding continues, pain is worsening, or the site becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen or wet. Seek urgent attention for fainting, severe breathlessness, rapidly increasing swelling or fever with marked illness. Mention the biopsy site when you call, since risks and advice differ for areas such as the breast, thyroid, liver or lymph node.

Questions to ask

Ask which method answers your specific question, how imaging will guide it, what preparation is needed, when pathology is expected, and what happens if FNAC or the tissue cores are inconclusive.

Questions people ask

Which is better, FNAC or trucut biopsy?

Neither is universally preferable. The appropriate method depends on the target and the information the clinician and pathologist need.

Can FNAC and trucut biopsy be done at the same visit?

They can sometimes be planned together, but the decision depends on the target, imaging and expected diagnostic value.
