Fluconazole rash: what to know

A mild, limited rash can still need advice because fluconazole can cause skin reactions. A rash that starts soon after a dose, spreads, becomes raised or painful, or appears with other symptoms deserves prompt assessment. The original infection may also be changing, so do not assume every new mark is an expected part of recovery.

Severe medicine reactions may affect the skin and moist areas such as the mouth or eyes. Risk can be harder to judge when other medicines are involved, which is why the full medication list matters.

Contact the prescriber or pharmacist about any new rash and describe when it began, where it is, how quickly it is changing, and whether you have fever, swelling, pain, or sores. Do not take another dose until you have received advice if the rash is new or worsening, unless your treating clinician has given you a specific plan.

Avoid starting another antifungal on your own. Keep a photograph and the medicine packaging available, and mention allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver conditions, and other medicines.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, collapse, blistering, peeling skin, widespread painful redness, or sores involving the mouth, eyes, or genitals. A rash with fever or marked illness also needs urgent assessment.
