Flu Without Fever: What Should You Know?

Flu can occur without fever, so cough, aches, chills and sudden fatigue still deserve attention. Some people have a normal temperature throughout the illness, while others may have taken fever medicine before checking it.

Influenza often begins suddenly and may bring dry cough, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, chills and unusual exhaustion. A normal reading does not rule it out. Similar symptoms can come from a common cold or COVID-19, while chest symptoms may occur with acute bronchitis. Symptoms alone cannot identify the virus.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and use simple foods as tolerated. Check your temperature with the same reliable method if you feel hot or shivery, and follow the label or a clinician's advice for any symptom medicine. Limit close contact while unwell, improve ventilation and wash your hands. Contact a clinician promptly if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, very young, older, or living with a long-term condition, because assessment and early treatment may matter.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, new confusion, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, or a clear deterioration after initial improvement. Arrange medical advice when symptoms are severe, last longer than expected, or you are unsure whether another infection is involved.

Ask whether your symptom pattern needs influenza or COVID-19 testing, which medicines are suitable with your health conditions, and when you can safely return to work, school or close contact.
