Short answer

Loss of appetite can occur during influenza because illness and inflammation reduce the desire to eat, but it can also accompany several digestive, infectious, or emotional conditions.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common context
Fever, nausea, tiredness, congestion, or taste changes can reduce appetite.
Main priority
Take frequent sips of fluid and choose small portions that you tolerate.
Review needed
Persistent loss, weight loss, jaundice, or ongoing vomiting needs medical advice.

How to interpret reduced appetite

During a flu-like illness, fever, tiredness, nausea, a blocked nose, or changes in taste can make food less appealing. Appetite often returns as the illness improves. Vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, or jaundice points toward a different or additional problem such as gastroenteritis or another digestive condition.

Reduced appetite that lasts beyond the acute illness, causes ongoing weight loss, or occurs with persistent low mood deserves a clinical review. Appetite alone cannot identify influenza, COVID-19, depression, or a stomach condition.

Supporting yourself

Prioritise frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you are losing fluid. Choose small, easy-to-tolerate portions such as soup, yoghurt, rice, or toast, and increase variety as your appetite returns. Avoid forcing large meals and rest while monitoring your symptoms.

If you have diabetes, kidney disease, are pregnant, or care for a child or older adult, ask a clinician for tailored fluid and food advice. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless your clinician tells you otherwise.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for confusion, difficulty breathing, severe or worsening abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine and marked weakness. Arrange a review for persistent appetite loss, repeated vomiting, jaundice, or unintentional weight loss.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your other symptoms fit influenza or another condition, how much fluid is suitable for you, and whether any regular medicine needs special instructions while you are eating less.

Questions people ask

Is loss of appetite enough to diagnose flu?

No. Reduced appetite has many possible causes and must be considered alongside symptoms such as fever, cough, aches, vomiting, or diarrhoea.

What should I consume when I do not feel hungry?

Try frequent sips of fluid and small portions of simple foods, then gradually return to normal meals as you feel better.
