Flu without fever

Influenza-like symptoms may include sudden tiredness, aching muscles, headache, chills, cough, sore throat, or reduced appetite. Some people have no raised temperature, particularly early in an illness or after taking fever-reducing medicine. A common cold can produce similar symptoms, and COVID-19 may do so as well. Acute bronchitis is another possible explanation when cough and chest irritation dominate.

Notice when symptoms began, whether breathing is comfortable, and whether you can drink and pass urine normally. These details help a clinician judge severity more usefully than fever alone.

Rest and sip fluids throughout the day. Warm drinks, saline nasal rinses, and honey for adults and children over one year can ease throat or nasal irritation. Use medicines only as directed, checking labels for repeated ingredients. Limit close contact while unwell, improve airflow indoors, and consider testing when advised for a circulating infection.

Contact a clinician if the illness is worsening, prolonged, or repeatedly returning. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, or marked drowsiness. Arrange earlier assessment for infants, older adults, pregnancy, or significant long-term disease.
