What should you know about FLT3 targeted therapy?

FLT3 is a protein signal involved in the growth and survival of some blood-forming cells. A change in the FLT3 gene can make this signal overly active. A targeted medicine is designed to interrupt that specific pathway, which may slow the growth of abnormal cells. Testing a blood or bone-marrow sample helps the oncology team determine whether an FLT3 change is present and which treatment approach fits the diagnosis.

The treatment may be used alongside other medicines, during an initial treatment phase, or when disease has returned, depending on the cancer and your previous care. It is not the same as chemotherapy, although the two may be given together. The plan depends on the exact FLT3 alteration, blood counts, other health conditions, and how the disease responds.

Ask which test identified the FLT3 change and what the result means for your treatment plan. Keep an up-to-date list of medicines, supplements, allergies, and heart or liver problems, because targeted medicines can interact with other treatments.
