Short answer

Flatulent dyspepsia means indigestion with gas or belching; meal patterns, reflux, medicines, and upper-digestive conditions can contribute.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical features
Belching, fullness, upper-abdominal discomfort, or burning.
Review needed
Persistent symptoms or swallowing, bleeding, or weight-loss concerns.

How it can feel

Dyspepsia may cause upper-abdominal discomfort, early fullness, burning, nausea, belching, or a feeling that food sits heavily. Swallowed air and fermentation lower in the digestive tract can add pressure, while reflux may bring sour fluid or burning behind the breastbone. Gastritis, a stomach infection, an ulcer, gallstones, or a hiatus hernia can produce overlapping symptoms. The symptom label does not identify which cause is present.

Practical steps

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating if lying down worsens discomfort. Limit foods or drinks that clearly trigger symptoms, including fizzy drinks, while avoiding unnecessary broad restriction. Review pain relievers and other medicines with a pharmacist or clinician because some can irritate the stomach. Do not start acid-reducing treatment for a prolonged period without advice, especially if symptoms are new or recurring.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe or persistent abdominal pain, fainting, chest pressure, trouble swallowing, or repeated vomiting. Arrange a medical review for symptoms that persist, return frequently, wake you, or occur with unintentional weight loss, anaemia symptoms, fever, or yellowing of the skin. A clinician may review medicines, examine you, and decide whether testing is appropriate.

Questions for your doctor

Could reflux, gastritis, an ulcer, gallstones, or a stomach infection explain my symptoms? Should any medicine be changed? Do I need testing, and which warning signs should prompt faster care?

Questions people ask

Is flatulent dyspepsia the same as acid reflux?

No. They can overlap, but dyspepsia includes upper-abdominal indigestion while reflux involves stomach contents moving upward and may cause sour taste or chest burning.

Can medicines cause gas and indigestion?

Yes. Some medicines can alter digestion or irritate the stomach. A pharmacist can review your full list before any changes are made.
