Flat Wart Removal: What to Know

Flat warts are small, smooth, slightly raised growths linked to a skin infection with human papillomavirus. They may be flesh-coloured, pink or brown and often occur in groups on the face, hands, arms or legs. Shaving, scratching or picking can spread them to nearby skin.

Not every smooth bump is a wart. A clinician may use its shape, surface, colour, distribution and history to distinguish it from a mole, skin tag or another lesion. If the appearance is atypical, further assessment may be needed before removal.

Avoid shaving over affected skin, sharing razors or towels, and picking at the surface. Keep the area clean and cover it if rubbing makes it sore. Do not apply strong acids or home freezing products to the face or near the eyes without medical advice.

A clinician may recommend wart removal using a method suited to the site and number of lesions. The plan can involve treatment of visible warts and observation of the surrounding skin. Follow aftercare instructions, because redness, crusting or temporary colour change can occur during healing.

Arrange an assessment if a supposed wart changes quickly, bleeds, becomes persistently painful, ulcerates or fails to resemble nearby lesions. Seek earlier advice if you have reduced immunity, diabetes, poor wound healing or a lesion close to the eye. Do not delay review by repeatedly treating an uncertain mark at home.
