What should you know about flat-knit compression hosiery?

Short answer

Flat-knit compression hosiery is a firm, shaped garment that applies graduated pressure to help manage limb swelling and support fluid movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the flat-knit style is used

Flat-knit fabric is less elastic and can be made to match an uneven limb shape. Its firmer structure may help contain swelling and reduce folds that could press into the skin. It is often considered when swelling is persistent, the limb shape is unusual, or softer circular-knit fabric does not provide a suitable fit. A garment does not treat the underlying cause, and the right pressure level depends on circulation, skin condition, swelling, sensation, and the limb being fitted.

Using it safely

Have the garment measured and supplied by a trained professional, particularly after cancer treatment or lymph-node surgery. Put it on as instructed, usually when swelling is least, and smooth out wrinkles without rolling the top edge. Check your skin and toes or fingers each day for redness, rubbing, colour change, numbness, or pressure marks. Keep the fabric clean and follow its washing and replacement instructions. Exercise, skin care, and other parts of [Lymphoedema Therapy](/treatments/survivorship-and-rehabilitation/lymphoedema-therapy/) may be recommended alongside hosiery.

When to remove it and seek help

Remove the garment and contact your care team if you develop new numbness, tingling, coldness, blue or pale fingers or toes, marked pain, or deep pressure damage. Sudden one-sided swelling with warmth, redness, chest pain, or breathlessness needs urgent assessment because a clot or infection may need prompt treatment. Do not force the garment back on if the limb has changed shape or the fit has become painful.

Questions for your fitting visit

Ask who should measure you, how long to wear the garment, how to put it on without injuring your skin, and how to check circulation. Ask when the fit should be reviewed and whether a different [Compression Garment](/materials/compression-garment/) is appropriate for travel, exercise, or changing swelling.

Questions people ask

Is flat-knit hosiery suitable for everyone with swelling?

Not automatically. A professional should check circulation, skin, sensation, and limb shape before choosing pressure and fit.

Can I sleep in it?

Only if your care team specifically advises this; wear schedules depend on the garment, the swelling, and your health.
