What should you know about flat iron hair breakage?

Breakage affects the visible hair shaft, so short uneven pieces, split ends, rough texture, and many small hairs around the hairline may appear. It differs from shedding, in which a complete hair leaves the follicle. Heat can remove moisture and alter the proteins that give hair strength; pulling a hot iron through tightly held sections adds mechanical stress. Previously bleached, relaxed, dyed, or naturally fragile hair can be more vulnerable.

Pause or reduce flat-iron use while the hair recovers. Use the lowest setting that gives the desired result, work on fully dry hair, keep the iron moving, and avoid repeated passes over one section. Detangle gently, limit tight styles, and use a conditioner suited to your hair. A trim can remove split ends, but it cannot repair a broken shaft; new length must grow from the follicle. Scalp scaling, itching, or patchy loss may point to another problem, such as Scalp Ringworm or Traction Alopecia.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if breakage continues after reducing heat, the scalp is painful or inflamed, hair is coming out in distinct patches, or the scalp shows scale or sores.
