What should you know about a flat dermatofibroma?

A dermatofibroma is a compact growth of fibrous tissue in the skin. It may be tan, brown, pink, or darker than nearby skin, and it can feel firm when pressed. Some lesions form a shallow dip when pinched from the sides. A flat appearance does not by itself establish the diagnosis, because scars, moles, inflamed follicles, and other growths can look similar.

A clinician may assess the lesion with magnification and decide whether observation is suitable. If the appearance is atypical or the diagnosis is uncertain, a tissue sample may be discussed.

Take a clear photograph beside a ruler and record any changes in size, outline, colour, texture, bleeding, or itching. Avoid picking at the surface, and protect exposed skin from ultraviolet light. Most stable lesions do not require treatment for health reasons. If it catches on clothing or remains bothersome, ask whether surgical excision is appropriate and what scar to expect.

Book a dermatology review if the spot grows, develops several colours, becomes persistently itchy or painful, bleeds, crusts, or forms an open area. Arrange assessment sooner if it looks noticeably different from your other skin marks. These signs do not prove a serious condition; they show why an examination is useful.

Ask how confident the clinician is about the diagnosis, whether a sample is needed, and what changes to monitor. If removal is considered, ask about wound care, expected healing, and the possible scar.
