Flank pain worse with deep breath: what to know

A deep breath expands the ribs and moves the muscles between them, so a strain, bruise, or irritated rib joint can hurt with breathing, coughing, or turning. Inflammation near the lungs can also cause sharp pain linked to breaths and may occur with cough or fever. Kidney pain is usually deeper and may come with nausea, burning urination, frequent urination, or blood in the urine. These patterns overlap, so the symptom alone is not a diagnosis.

Avoid strenuous lifting and note whether the pain changes with movement, touch, cough, or posture. Breathe gently but do not repeatedly force deep breaths to test the pain. Seek advice before taking anti-inflammatory medicine if you have kidney disease, stomach problems, take blood thinners, or are pregnant. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics.

Get emergency help for sudden breathlessness, chest pressure, blue lips, fainting, confusion, coughing blood, or severe rapidly increasing pain.
