What should you know about flaky scalp at hairline?

The hairline can collect oil, sweat, styling residue and shampoo, so scale may appear there before it is noticed elsewhere. Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can cause loose white or yellowish flakes with itch. Scalp psoriasis may produce thicker, clearly defined scale that extends beyond the hairline. A fungal infection such as scalp ringworm is more concerning when scaling comes with broken hairs, tender areas or patches of hair loss. A flaky scalp symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Wash the scalp gently and rinse the hairline thoroughly. Avoid scratching, picking scale or applying fragranced oils and harsh exfoliants to irritated skin. Keep styling products off the affected edge while it settles. An over-the-counter anti-dandruff product may help when flakes are mild; follow its label and allow it to contact the scalp as directed. If the area remains inflamed, a dermatologist can distinguish dandruff from psoriasis, dermatitis or infection and recommend targeted treatment, including medicated shampoo therapy when appropriate.

Arrange a dermatology review if flaking persists despite gentle care, repeatedly returns, or spreads onto the forehead, ears or neck. Seek prompt medical attention for pain, pus, marked swelling, fever, crusting, tender lumps, or new patchy hair loss. Do not share combs, brushes, hats or pillowcases if a fungal infection is possible, because it can spread between people.
