Short answer

Hand therapy uses personalised exercises, movement training and practical supports to improve hand function after injury, surgery or a long-term condition.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What hand therapy involves

A hand therapist may assess movement, grip, sensation, swelling and the way you use your hand during daily tasks. Treatment can include gentle range-of-motion work, strengthening, scar care, splinting, joint protection and advice about adapting activities. It may support recovery after a wrist fracture or surgery, and may help people managing De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, Dupuytren's Contracture, Hand Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis.

How to get started

Bring a list of activities that are difficult, such as opening containers, typing or dressing. Follow the exercise schedule provided and increase activity gradually rather than repeatedly testing a painful movement. A splint should fit comfortably and should not cause numbness, colour change or worsening swelling. A clinician can direct you to Hand Therapy and discuss whether another treatment, such as Carpal Tunnel Release or Dupuytren's Surgery, is relevant.

When to seek care

Arrange prompt assessment after a significant injury, a visible deformity, new loss of sensation, inability to move a finger or rapidly increasing swelling. Seek urgent help for a hand that becomes cold, pale or blue, or for severe pain after an injury. Persistent symptoms that interfere with work, sleep or self-care also deserve an examination.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what is limiting your hand function, which movements are safe now, how often exercises should be done, and what signs mean a splint needs adjustment. You can also ask when you may return to a specific task and whether you need referral to a hand therapist.
