Fishy vaginal smell during sex: what to know

Movement and moisture during sex can make an existing smell easier to notice. Semen or lubricant may also alter vaginal acidity temporarily. If the odour is strong or keeps returning, bacterial imbalance or another infection is possible, especially with unusual discharge, itching, burning, pelvic pain, or pain during sex.

A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and take a sample to distinguish causes that need different treatments. Do not rely on smell alone to diagnose an infection or sexually transmitted infection.

Stop if sex is painful, and wash the external area gently with water afterward. Avoid douching, scented lubricants, deodorants, and internal cleansing products. Use condoms if appropriate for your situation and arrange sexual-health or gynaecology care when the odour persists, recurs, or comes with discharge or irritation.

Ask what examinations or swabs are suitable, whether the timing during sex changes the interpretation, whether you should avoid sex until results are available, whether a partner needs review, and what changes require urgent help.
