Fishy smell and bleeding after intercourse: what to know

The odour may reflect a change in the vaginal bacterial balance, an infection, or irritation of the vagina or cervix. Bleeding after sex can occur when tissue is inflamed or easily irritated, but it can also have causes that need examination. The symptom combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

A clinician may ask about timing, discharge, pelvic pain, contraception, pregnancy possibility, and recent sexual contact. They may examine the vagina and cervix and offer swab or other tests. Avoid assuming the smell is caused by hygiene; internal washing can further disturb the vaginal environment.

Arrange an appointment with a gynaecology or sexual-health clinician. Until you are assessed, wash the external area gently with water or a mild unscented cleanser, keep the area dry, and avoid douching, deodorant sprays, and inserting products to mask the smell. Note when bleeding occurs and whether discharge, itching, pain, or urinary symptoms appear.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or ongoing bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, faintness, fever, vomiting, or feeling very unwell. Seek prompt assessment if you could be pregnant, have missed a period, or have bleeding after sex that keeps returning. These features can require timely examination rather than home monitoring.
