What should you know about first trimester oligohydramnios?

Amniotic fluid cushions the pregnancy and supports movement. Very early in pregnancy, fluid assessment can be difficult and depends on ultrasound findings, gestational age and whether the membranes are intact. A suspected low measurement may need repeat imaging rather than a conclusion from one scan. Clinicians also consider fetal development, the placenta, kidney and urinary-tract development, and any fluid leakage.

Ask the clinician who performed the scan what was measured, how certain the finding is, and when it should be reviewed. Report any gush or ongoing trickle of clear fluid, bleeding, cramps, fever or reduced wellbeing. Keep scheduled appointments, drink normally unless your clinician has given different advice, and do not insert anything into the vagina after suspected fluid leakage until you have received guidance.

Contact your maternity service urgently for suspected fluid leakage, significant bleeding, severe pain, fever, faintness or feeling acutely unwell. Fluid concerns can require examination to distinguish amniotic fluid from urine or normal discharge. The plan may involve repeat ultrasound and specialist review; later pregnancy decisions depend on findings, gestational age and your health.
